A few years ago, I made a New Year’s resolution to stop eating fast food – with the exception of French fries, which I deemed sacrilegious to give up. To satisfy my cravings for fast food, I created a recipe that uses healthy ingredients, and it has proven to be a great alternative. While it may not be as quick and easy as fast food, the satisfaction I get from using wholesome ingredients makes it well worth the effort.

This salad is so hearty and filling that if I serve it for dinner, my husband doesn’t give me a strange look, as if he can’t believe that I am only serving a salad for dinner. I’ve also taken this salad to share at gatherings. It travels well in a covered bowl, and when we arrived and were ready to eat, I simply poured the homemade dressing over the salad. This salad is a perfect combination of healthy ingredients and taste that makes it a great option for any meal.

If you’re looking to change some eating habits and be more mindful of healthy options without sacrificing flavor, this dish is the perfect choice. It’s a full meal, but if you want the full fast food experience at home, I recommend making some French fries and maybe even using some of the dressing as a dip. If you’d like to make a dip with your dressing, simply mix the dressing with 2 tablespoons of avocado mayo. Gradually add more dressing to the mixture until you reach your desired consistency and flavor. This combination of avocado mayo and the homemade dressing will make a delicious and creamy dip that you can enjoy with your fries or as a side to your salad.

- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 2 heads of romaine
- 1 cup grape tomatoes
- 1/2 cup sliced dill pickles
- 1/4 cup red onion
- 1 tsp sesame seeds
- ⅓ cup avocado mayo
- 1 tsp red wine vinegar
- 2 ½ tsp pickle juice
- 2 tsp yellow mustard
- 1 tsp ketchup
- 1/2 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp minced white onion
- Salt & pepper to taste
Instructions:
- Begin by heating a pan over medium heat. Add the ground beef and season it with garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper to taste. Cook the beef until it is fully cooked, ensuring it is nicely browned and flavorful. Once cooked, set it aside to cool slightly.
- In a separate bowl, prepare the dressing by combining the avocado mayo, minced white onion, pickle juice, red wine vinegar, yellow mustard, ketchup, paprika, a pinch of salt and pepper. Whisk the ingredients together until well combined. Place the dressing in the refrigerator to chill, allowing the flavors to meld together.
- Clean and chop the romaine lettuce into bite-sized pieces. Arrange the lettuce in a salad bowl, creating a bed of crisp and fresh greens.
- Add the halved grape tomatoes, sliced dill pickles, and thinly sliced red onion on top of the lettuce, creating a vibrant and colorful salad base.
- When ready to serve, add the cooked ground beef to the salad, distributing it evenly over the vegetables. This adds the delicious burger element to the dish, providing savory and satisfying bites.
- Drizzle the chilled dressing generously over the salad, coating the ingredients with its creamy and tangy goodness. The dressing adds a luscious touch, bringing all the flavors together.
- Sprinkle the salad with sesame seeds, adding a delightful nutty flavor and a satisfying crunch.
