5 Non-Negotiables for Moving: Your Key to a Stress-Free Relocation

Moving can be such a stressful experience. Even if it’s been less than three years since our last move, you forget how stressful it is. Our previous home held so many precious memories, from hosting our wedding to bringing our daughter home from the hospital. It truly held a special place in our hearts and we were lucky to have the best neighbors one could ask for. However, when our real estate agent showed us a hidden gem that wasn’t even listed on the market, we knew it was an opportunity we couldn’t pass up. So, with mixed emotions, we embarked on the journey of moving once again.

I must say, the funny thing about moving is that whether it’s just a five-minute drive away or to an entirely different city, the to-do list remains the same. But with my event planning background, I thrive in stressful situations and find myself tapping into skills I never knew I had.

To make the process smoother, my mom flew in all the way from South Africa to help take care of our daughter. I couldn’t have managed the planning and logistics while being with Sophia 24/7 without her support. And let me tell you, She is becoming quite the busy bee, always keeping me on my toes. The move wouldn’t have gone as smoothly without my mom’s help.

Our real estate agent, Risa Kessler, went above and beyond to ensure a seamless transition. She not only walked our dogs during some showings but also made the extra effort to get the house ready, even coming over late at night. With two dogs and an 18-month-old, we wanted to avoid the hassle of having our entire family displaced during showings. Risa understood our unique needs and went the extra mile, making this stressful part of the move much more manageable.

We decided to hire No More Chores for a move-in/out clean of our new house prior to our move. I was skeptical at first, wondering if they would pay attention to every little detail that I would usually take care of myself. To my surprise, they exceeded all expectations. They cleaned every nook and cranny, leaving no drawer or cupboard untouched. They even went the extra mile by cleaning the appliances and offering to tidy up the garage, a part of the house that often gets overlooked. As someone who can spend hours meticulously cleaning baseboards with a toothbrush, I was impressed by the thoroughness of their service. I now see the value in a move-in/out clean and will definitely opt for it in future moves. No Tita could have done a job close to what No More Chores did.

In the past, we’ve had mixed experiences with big moving companies, leaving us with a sour taste in our mouths. This time, I was determined to find a company I felt confident in. After calling numerous options, I finally came across JP Moves You. What stood out to me was that they had the same person answering the phone every time. If I had a question or encountered a problem, I knew I could talk directly to someone who could help, rather than dealing with impersonal customer service centers. With the multitude of issues that can arise during a move, this level of personalized service reassured me. Additionally, the owner of the company personally handled the move of our daughter’s nursery items to the new house, allowing her to stick to her sleeping schedule. As a planner, that was music to my ears.

All these incredible individuals and services made this stressful life event go much smoother, providing us with some much-needed peace of mind. This move was different from our previous ones, as we learned from past hiccups and set clear guidelines for everyone involved. It’s important to know yourself and your family’s needs and communicate them to ensure a successful move. If a person or company doesn’t align with your expectations, don’t hesitate to seek alternatives. There’s always someone out there who understands your unique requirements and will meet them. And remember, if you adjust your expectations, you’ll avoid disappointment during the move.

Take the time to plan and prepare for your move, considering the things you’ll need for the closing of your current home and the items that will make settling into your new home easier. Based on my experience, here are my top five non-negotiables for future moves:

  • 1. Opt for a move-in/out clean to eliminate a major stressor. It ensures that the house is left in pristine condition and saves you from the hassle of cleaning up after moving into your new home.
  • 2. Address any construction fixes or changes to enhance your comfort before moving in. It’s best to have them completed before the cleaners arrive, so you can start fresh in your new space.
  • 3. Arrange for someone else to take care of your living, breathing responsibilities, such as dogs, cats, or little humans. This allows you to focus on the moving process without major interruptions.
  • 4. Invest in proper moving boxes that are designed for specific items. Glassware goes in glass boxes, plates in plate boxes, and so on. This way, when you unpack, you can easily find items and place them in their respective rooms without any confusion or finding something has broken.
  • 5. Avoid choosing a moving company solely based on a quick internet search. The first result may just be the company with the best marketing. Instead, call multiple companies and find one that truly aligns with your family’s needs. This will save you stress and ensure a smoother moving day.

Remember, moving is a unique experience for every family, and it’s important to tailor your approach to suit your specific circumstances. By following these tips and being mindful of your family’s requirements, you can navigate the moving process with greater ease and create a more positive experience.
