Seasonal Summer Fruits and Veggies That Are Toddler-Approved

As a mom to a 19-month-old, I’ve discovered the joys and struggles of introducing my little one to a world of fresh flavors and tastes. One thing I’ve learned along the way is that the seasonality of fruits and vegetables can make a significant difference in their appeal to young taste buds. Discover the delicious seasonal foods that Ontario, Canada has to offer during this time of year.

Strawberries:

  • As summer graces Ontario, the arrival of luscious strawberries is a cause for celebration. Ruby-red gems are not only irresistibly sweet but also packed with essential vitamins and antioxidants. Take your little one to a local strawberry farm for a delightful picking adventure, or bring home a basket of ripe berries to enjoy together. From fresh strawberry purees to homemade strawberry popsicles, the possibilities are endless.

Peaches:

  • Ontario peaches are renowned for their unparalleled flavor and juiciness. As the sun-kissed peaches ripen on the trees, they become the perfect addition to your little one’s plate. Offer them sliced, or blend them into creamy peach smoothies for a nutritious treat. You might be surprised how the natural sweetness and enticing aroma of fresh peaches can captivate your child’s taste buds.

Zucchini:

  • Don’t overlook the humble zucchini, which thrives during the summer months in Ontario. It’s an excellent choice for introducing new textures and flavors to your little one’s diet. Grated zucchini can be incorporated into muffins or pancakes, adding moisture and nutrients.

Blueberries:

  • Blueberries, known for their sweet-tart taste and are a true summer treasure in Ontario. Packed with antioxidants, fiber, and essential vitamins, they make a perfect snack for your little one. Mix them into oatmeal, sprinkle cut pieces over yogurt.

Corn:

  • Ontario sweet corn is a summertime delicacy that will delight your little one’s taste buds. Whether grilled, boiled, or steamed, the natural sweetness of corn makes it an easy no fuss snack for kids.

Exploring seasonal foods with your little one is not only an adventure but also a wonderful opportunity to instill healthy eating habits from an early age. Ontario’s produce offers a plethora of nutritious and delicious options that your child will love. So, head to your local farmer’s market or pick-your-own farm, and savor the delights of the season with your little one. Happy Summer!
